A View of Delft and…
Oil on Panel 16” x 20” x .25” Sold
Vermeer is one of those artists who seem to be universally loved, like DaVinci, Michelangelo or Monet. I have been fortunate in my travels to see over 20 of his paintings in person and have had wonderful conversations with other artists about his work.
I did notice; however, that sometimes talking to art lovers, they liked the idea of Vermeer, his story (they read the book or saw the movie) but actually, they weren’t very familiar with most of his paintings that didn’t include a pearl earring.
This painting began as an artistic attempt to learn more about Vermeer’s painting by copying one of them, but then became a cheeky test of a viewers knowledge of Vermeer. Where there was no building in the middle of the skyline I inserted the Disney Magic Kingdom castle. The painting was hung in a regional group exhibition and was purchased, the buyer had a sense of art history humor that mirrored my own.
